How to Clean a Wooden Cutting Board using Lemon and Salt
With just a couple of ingredients that you most likely already have in your kitchen, you can easily give your cutting board a thorough cleaning. A lemon, a bit of salt, and warm water is all that is needed. With these few ingredients and a bit of elbow grease, you can restore your cutting board’s original shine, leaving it smelling and looking amazing!
What is needed:
Halved Lemon
Salt
Warm Water
Wash Cloth or Sponge
Plastic Scraper (optional)
1. Apply salt to cutting board. - Sprinkle salt to lightly cover the cutting board. Usually a few spoonful’s of salt is all that is needed. This varies on the size of your board.
2. Scrub entire surface. - Cut a lemon in half. Using the lemon with the cut side facing down, scrub the cutting board thoroughly. This is where elbow grease is needed. Scrub in circular motions, scrubbing harder in areas where stains are present.
3. Let this sit for 5-10 minutes. - If needed, you can use a plastic scraper to gently remove grime. Use a wash cloth or sponge rinse and clean.
4. Let cutting board dry. - Stand up your cutting board on one of it’s sides. This will ensure the board can fully dry and reduce any possible warping. Let the board fully dry overnight before using again.
5. Apply cutting board oil or wax. - It is important to keep your cutting boards oils or waxed. This protects its finish and ensures the wood will not dry out and crack.
You may be surprised at how much grime comes out of your cutting board when doing this deep clean. Even if your cutting board appears to be clean, this method can bring out a lot of hidden grime. It is great to do this once a month if you are using your cutting board frequently.
Using this safe and natural method, you can ensure that your cutting or serving boards remain in excellent condition for many years to come.
